James Talarico said Biden failed Texas on the border

The Democratic Senate candidate said Donald Trump was right that the prior administration lost control of the border.

James Talarico said the Biden administration failed Texas on the southern border and that Donald Trump was right to say so. Talarico, a state representative running for the U.S. Senate, made the claim on Diary of a CEO while discussing immigration ahead of the November election.

Talarico said colleagues representing border communities described chaos during the Biden years. His mother is from Laredo on the Texas-Mexico border. He argued most Texans want both a secure border and legal pathways for immigrants, and that politics falsely pits those goals against each other.

Public safety is the most important job of government, Talarico said, but he added that the United States remains a nation of immigrants. He said he would back comprehensive immigration reform that includes border security and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented people who have lived in the country for years, including dreamers he taught as a middle school teacher in San Antonio.

Talarico said the Trump administration replaced one form of immigration extremism with another, citing masked enforcement, deportations of long-established business owners, and detention of children as young as five. He said he would work with Trump if elected to deliver for working people, but that more than a year into the current term promises on costs, wars, and transparency had not been kept.
