La Luz del Mundo celebrated its centennial as Naasón García remained in prison
YouTuber Tyler Oliveira filmed members in Guadalajara, Dallas, and Houston who still call the convicted apostle their spiritual leader.
In Guadalajara, Mexico, Tyler Oliveira filmed thousands of La Luz del Mundo members gathering at Hermosa Provincia for the church's centennial Holy Supper while Naasón Joaquín García remained in prison on child sex crimes. He posted the footage on Sept. 3, 2026.
La Luz del Mundo is a Mexico-based evangelical church claiming millions of followers in more than 50 countries. Naasón Joaquín García succeeded his father and grandfather as apostle, the church's supreme earthly authority. In June 2022 he pleaded guilty to two counts of forcible oral copulation involving minors and one lewd act on a 15-year-old. A judge later sentenced him to 16 years and eight months.
Pilgrims from Europe, Asia, and Africa slept in church-provided rooms at Hermosa Provincia for the anniversary. Members told Oliveira they viewed García's prosecution as a test of faith and prayed for his release. His portrait hung throughout the colony even as he served his California sentence.
Joel Silva Rosco, an architect born into the church, told Oliveira he spent years designing the flagship Guadalajara temple under apostle Samuel Joaquín Flores. In 1997 Samuel ordered him to remarry or leave leadership; when Silva Rosco chose a woman who had served in Samuel's house, the apostle expelled him. Silva Rosco said the woman later described sexual abuse by Samuel starting when she was 14.
Another ex-member, identified only as Z, told Oliveira that pastors tracked attendance, barred movies and outside music, and required permission to travel. In September 2025, federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment charging García, his mother Eva García de Joaquín, and four others with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and child exploitation spanning decades. The indictment alleged the enterprise operated for the sexual gratification of García and his father Samuel.
Oliveira traveled to a Dallas branch and handed members printouts of García's guilty plea. Several refused to read them, told him to read the news, or said García had been set up like Jesus. Church staff ordered him off the property, and police later questioned him on the sidewalk.
In Houston, families entered an $18 million Greco-Roman temple built with member donations and volunteer labor while Oliveira shouted the charges from the sidewalk. Former missionaries told him leaving meant losing housing, community, and family ties. García remains in federal custody awaiting trial scheduled for March 2027.
