Google permitted personalized alcohol advertising on YouTube
The change opens targeting tools alcohol brands have largely avoided on the platform.
Google said it will update its personalized advertising policy for YouTube on October 30, 2026, to permit alcohol ad targeting where local law allows. The shift applies to YouTube inventory and loosens rules that have kept beer, wine, and spirits spots from using the same personalization tools other categories receive.
Alcohol ads already run on YouTube under tight limits. Personalized targeting has been off, users can opt out of alcohol spots, and homepage banners cannot reference alcohol. Google cited customer interest, emerging categories, and improved controls and data protections as reasons for the update.
Advertisers will gain access to predefined Google audiences for alcohol products under Google's alcohol targeting rules, though advertiser-curated audiences remain barred for sensitive categories. Google will still block health-data targeting tied to alcohol, enforce age restrictions, and withhold personalization for minors.
Viewers retain controls to limit alcohol ads and choose topics and brands they want to see. Markets where alcohol advertising faces stricter rules will not get the new personalization layer.
