YouTube rejected paid ads for Gibney's Musk documentary
Bleecker Street said TikTok and Meta also blocked the buy and that Meta has denied its appeal.
YouTube declined paid placement for ads promoting Alex Gibney's four-hour Elon Musk documentary Musk after distributor Bleecker Street submitted the trailer that debuted Thursday.
YouTube, TikTok, and Meta each told Bleecker Street the spot violated rules on political content. The trailer includes footage from a 2024 rally and a closing reference to that year's election, material the studio argues falls outside the campaign-ad rules Meta and TikTok cite.
YouTube permits campaign advertising when candidates supply paid-for disclosures, which made the platform's rejection harder for the distributor to parse. Bleecker Street appealed with all three companies. Meta rejected the appeal; TikTok and YouTube were still reviewing the petitions when the studio commented.
X, which Elon Musk owns, also refused to accept the ad or sell inventory for other Bleecker Street releases. Musk opens in theaters on Oct. 9.
