Cho Jin-woo died in Bolivia after a cargo truck struck him
Police in El Alto detained the hit-and-run driver hours later. His JinsTravel channel had about 66,000 subscribers.
Cho Jin-woo, who documented round-the-world bicycle trips as JinsTravel on YouTube, was 33 when a large cargo truck struck him in El Alto, Bolivia, on November 4.
Witnesses reached him after the collision, but his injuries were fatal and he died at the scene at about 9:30 a.m. The truck driver fled and police apprehended him several hours later.
The driver told investigators he had not seen the bicycle, according to police. A breathalyzer test detected no alcohol in his system, and authorities said they were continuing to look into the crash.
JinsTravel launched on YouTube in 2020 and had drawn roughly 66,000 subscribers with rides through Europe, Africa, North America, and South America. He had started the current leg from Mexico and uploaded his last video on October 30 from Peru’s Andes.
On November 5 an acquaintance posted on the channel that Cho had died, with permission from his family. The message said he had spent years preparing for the journey and thanked viewers for following along.
Funeral arrangements were being handled in Bolivia with help from the South Korean Embassy. The family asked the public not to spread unverified speculation or footage of the accident.
